It felt a little strange at first, but I became comfortable with it rather quickly. I practiced rinsing my typodont (in compliance with HIPAA laws, I'll hereafter refer to him as Mr. T), and Sarah told me it looked like I was doing a good job. All I know is that Mr. T drooled all over. It made me think of all the times I've heard people say they couldn't handle working inside people's mouths because it's too disgusting. I honestly didn't find it to be all that bad.

As we learned the protocol for the use of PPE and the proper practice of operatory and patient treatment infection control, I was a little surprised at how many things there are to keep in mind. Each measure has its purpose, and it is amazing how easily, and in how many ways, a safe clinical environment can be compromised with just a brief moment of carelessness. I am sure things will become routine soon enough, but for now I'm going to have to be very conscious of what I'm doing at all times.

Today I discovered that my lab jacket is now going to be the most important piece of apparel in my wardrobe. What I mean is that I am going to have to take better care of it. No longer can I fold it up and shove it into my bag after removing it from the dryer. I showed up to clinic today with a wrinkle in my jacket and the wrong color of shoes, both of which were brought to my attention. You know, I'm a jeans and T-shirt guy; I'm not used to paying attention to such things! But if I can learn to use the HVE without sucking the latex lips right off of Mr. T's jaws, I think I can probably figure out how to use an iron.
